This type of therapy is a developmentally appropriate, evidence-based
counselling approach for younger clients that uses play as a natural medium
for children to express their emotions, process experiences, and develop
coping skills. It based on the understanding that children may lack the verbal
ability to articulate their feelings or thoughts, making play an essential tool for
communication and understanding.
Play Therapy may involve individual sessions and/or family-focused
interventions. Using frameworks such as Theraplay or Filial Therapy, parents
are taught parent-led Play Therapy techniques to enable them to use play as
a therapeutic tool to support and strengthen their bond with their child.
Child-Centered Approach: Tailored to the child’s unique needs,
experiences, and developmental stage.
Nonverbal Expression: Allows children to communicate emotions and
experiences through toys, art, games, or storytelling.
Safe Environment: Provides a supportive, structured space where
children feel secure in exploring and expressing themselves.
